Corporate Training Development: Strategy, Design, and Implementation

Overview

A&E Engineering is a well-established process and automation engineering firm that specializes in developing solutions for the chemical, automotive, pharma, and food & beverage manufacturing industries. The organization grew from a small operation in the founder’s garage to a global entity. I was brought in to evaluate the current training processes, materials, and tools and to help establish the learning and development department (which did not previously exist).

I used the ADDIE model to analyze, design, and develop the processes and assets for the learning and development team. The team itself, under my guidance, continues to create training resources and implement the project plan using the curriculum and tool solutions listed below.

Solutions

The following training curriculum and tools did not exist in the A&E Engineering learning and development department prior to my work with the organization. The A&E team has embraced these assets and are enthusiastically putting them in place with all new hires and existing employees.

  • With the support of the A&E Engineering learning and development team, I created the onboarding and new hire training curriculum, which includes the following modules:

    • A&E Engineering History, Culture, and Purpose

    • Company Mission and Values

    • Code of Conduct

    • Work Authorization Submission

    • Submitting Time and Pay Requests

    • Benefits Overview

    • Client Relations and Communication

    • And more…

  • The training modules created for existing A&E Engineering employees and managers include:

    • Entry Engineer Technical Onboarding

    • Project Management Training

    • Soft Skills for Engineers

    • Team-specific process training modules

  • At the request of numerous A&E Engineering clients, we are creating a bank of industry-specific training materials that can be sold and used by individual clients. These training resources help to ensure processes are standardized across organizations that create products for the same end user. For example, there are several A&E clients who manufacture components for the same automotive manufacturer. Providing standardized training ensures all contributors are using the same information to create their components.

Curriculum Development

  • A&E Engineering has launched the first LMS in the history of the organization. This allows employees to easily access and complete training, managers to track training completion for their team members, and HR to ensure everyone has completed compliance-related requirements.

  • In order to save on long-term costs associated with recording training videos and walkthroughs, I built a recording studio in the A&E Engineering headquarters. This studio will allow for quick and efficient content additions and changes as needed and will allow the learning and development team to have control over how they create and publish their training modules.

  • In order to support learning for new and existing engineers, we have built a hands-on learning lab for new engineering equipment and software. This lab allows engineers the ability to practice on equipment before meeting with the client.
